CalExit measure gets OK to collect state ballot signatures

Californians who want their state to secede from the U.S. can now start collecting signatures to place a "Calexit" initiative on the 2018 ballot, after California Secretary of State Alex Padilla cleared the proposed initiative to begin collecting signatures this week. Election officials announced Thursday that a proposal has been submitted to the Secretary of State's Office that would ask voters to repeal part of the state constitution that declares California an inseparable part of the United States.

To qualify for ballot status proponents of Calexit, named in reference to Brexit, the United Kingdom's recent decision to leave the European Union, must collect 585,407 signatures from registered voters over the coming 180 days.

California's secession movement has grown significantly since Donald Trump became the 45th president of the United States.

Californians have always been upset to find fewer tax dollars enter their state than leave.

Champagne corks pop in Moscow over Trump's inauguration
Don't get me wrong: despite its imperfections, the U.S. remains a positive force in the world. However, Trump and his transition team have repeatedly denied the dossier's assertions.

If passed, the ballot initiative would compel a statewide special election in 2019, asking voters whether they want California to remain a part of the U.S., or become an autonomous nation.

The initiative includes provisions requiring the vote for independence to receive at least a 55 percent yes vote and turnout to be at least 50 percent of registered voters.

"In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that conflict with Californian values", it says on the www.yescalifornia.org website.

The idea of California seceding has always been debated. The same would go for anything calling the U.S. Constitution the "supreme law of the land".

Shirtless Putin mocks Trump's inauguration crowd in hilarious Saturday Night Live sketch
If history proves true, President Donald Trump probably won't like the most recent cold open from Saturday Night Live. He promised Russian Federation will take care of America because "it's the most expensive thing we've ever bought".

The Los Angeles Times reported that the supporters of the proposal have said California does not share the same cultural ideas as the rest of America. "It could be a nation all its own, everybody knows that".

According to an opinion article he recently wrote for the San Jose Mercury News, Evans said “almost 7,000 volunteers” will collect the signatures, an extremely hard task without professional signature gatherers.

The support for independence apparently rose in the wake of Donald Trump's election in the November presidential election.

With 38.8million people, California is the most populous state in the USA and the third most extensive at 433,970 square kilometers.
