Hornchurch explosion: Flat may have been drugs factory

The explosion happened at a block of flats in Ardleigh Green Road, Hornchurch.

"We await an update on their conditions".

A London Ambulance spokesperson said: "We have treated three patients at the scene of a fire in Hornchurch and so far have taken one man to hospital".

After an explosion at a block of flats in London injured five people, two men have been arrested on Monday evening on suspicion of arson.

London Ambulance Service said four people had been treated at the scene and taken to hospital, while a woman and a child trapped on the building's second floor had escaped down a fire brigade ladder.

Residents have been evacuated from the blaze.

Police have confirmed that a possible cause of the explosion yesterday was the "preparation of a type of drug" in the flats.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police were called at 17:14 on Monday 23 January to reports of an explosion at a block of flats in Ardleigh Green Road, Hornchurch".

"We felt the whole building shake", he said.

"We pulled people back and told them to get out of the way", he said, adding that he and his staff brought people back to their office to give them shelter.
