Senate Democrats to hold floor over DeVos nomination vote

While this doesn't sound too bad, another article from the Washington Post says that Democrats fear the use of vouchers, which serves as "an unprecedented and catastrophic attack on public schools".

Murray, who has a record of bipartisan compromise in the Senate, has been sharply critical of DeVos, arguing that she lacks the experience needed to lead the Education Department and promotes policies that threaten public schools.

President Trump's nominee for education secretary, Betsy DeVos, appears before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee for her confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill.

Two Republicans have said they will vote against DeVos, which would result in a 50-50 tie that would leave the deciding vote to Vice President Mike Pence. In that event, Vice President Mike Pence is nearly sure to cast a first-ever, tie-breaking vote to confirm a Cabinet nominee.

On the Senate floor Tuesday, Sen.

"She has said education is an industry", Murray continued. Instead, it is an attempt to call more public attention to the vote, and increase public pressure on GOP senators who have already received tens of thousands of calls and emails from people who oppose DeVos.

Constituents making their voices heard against DeVos are far more likely to persuade a Republican senator than even the most persuasive speech from a Democratic senator. But Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the DeVos nomination is a special case. Also a conservative, her life and views naturally had a big impact on me, as well as the fine public schools I attended.

Mourinho to reintegrate Schweinsteiger further at United
Manchester United put in a command performance to power past Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday afternoon. Mourinho said Schweinsteiger could have more involvement in the second half of the season.

One final push came in the form of a gathering Saturday at the doorstep of Moran's Wichita office over the weekend, where Burnett, educators and others rallied to express concerns over DeVos' support for charter schools and taxpayer-funded vouchers.

Right now, DeVos just barely has enough votes.

"The after-effects of the widespread public backlash to her nomination will linger", she said. Many of the Senate Republicans who are considered potential flips have stated in recent days that they plan to vote for DeVos. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) have both vowed to vote against the nominee for Education Secretary last week.

DeVos drew fire during her confirmation hearing for saying it was best left to states to decide whether to follow the provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, or IDEA, which protects disabled students.
