Senate Dems Hold the Floor to Oppose DeVos Confirmation

"No other Trump cabinet nominee garnered the level of public opposition as Betsy DeVos and no other time in our nation's history has a Vice President of the United States stepped in to cast the deciding vote on a nomination".

She was the only cabinet pick to come close to failure after Democrats successfully stalled and delayed her senate hearing. DeVos also failed to convince key Republican Senators that she was ready to do the job for which she was nominated.

The Senate's vote on Tuesday-in which two Republicans, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Markowski of Alaska, crossed the aisle to vote against DeVos-marks the seventh of 22 Trump cabinet officials confirmed so far.

This vote comes after Democrats held the floor of the Senate for 24 hours to speak against Betsy DeVos. Vice President Mike Pence will act as a tie-breaking vote if need be.

Dozens killed after avalanches hit Afghanistan
Heavy snow was also reported in the Afghan capital of Kabul , where the government said it had closed its offices. Avalanches in Afghanistan have killed at least 54 people in the last three days, officials said Sunday.

The action is an attempt to call more public attention to the vote, and increase public pressure on GOP senators who have already received tens of thousands of calls and emails from people who oppose Mrs DeVos.

Sen. Joe Donnelly shared multiple anecdotes from "people all across IN", including a letter that he said was from a former teacher who was consumed with "fear, fury and grief" over DeVos' confirmation hearings.

He called DeVos a "brilliant and passionate education advocate", adding that "under her leadership we will reform the USA education system and break the bureaucracy that is holding our children back so that we can deliver world-class education and school choice to all families". Astonishingly, DeVos's children never attended public schools - and neither has DeVos herself - and yet she has just been confirmed as the leader of education in America. Both are from rural states where school-choice policies she backs could prove ruinous.

For a brief moment, it seemed that Democrats might be able to derail DeVos's nomination.

The aim of a marathon floor debate is to raise all the issues and concerns about DeVos, a major Republican donor from MI.

The Senate is scheduled to vote on DeVos's nomination Tuesday afternoon.

On her confirmation hearing, a spokesman for the group Friends of Betsy DeVos said she "was not as articulate as she could have been".
