As part of the rollout agreement to expand Telstra's long haul, Ericsson will supply, install, and integrate the next generation of converged packet-optical solutions from Ciena, a US-based global supplier of telecommunications networking equipment that will provide scalable, flexible, and programmable optics.
The service will utilise Ericsson's cloud-based infrastructure alongside Telstra's LTE-B capabilities to deliver movie content directly to consumer devices. The telco is also aiming to launch a 24/7 linear streaming channel using the technology, though this will reportedly only be available on select Samsung devices.
With LTE Broadcast On-Demand, the LTE service detects an increase in demand for popular content, like headline news or sports championships, and automatically switches from streaming in standard unicast to optimized LTE Broadcast.
"99% of Telstra's 4GX sites are already LTE-B capable, with the intention to have nationwide enablement and coverage for LTE-B by 2018", Telstra's Group Managing Director Networks Mike Wright said in a statement.

Ericsson, Telstra, and The Fox Innovation Lab at 21st Century Fox will unveil a first-of-its-kind content delivery solution at Mobile World Congress 2017 that will pre-position personalized, premium movie content directly onto consumer devices, with no impact to device performance or consumer data plans. Because of this, it'll also have use in sending a video stream to many users in one area - think of having the live TV broadcast of a footy game playing on your phone while you're in your stadium seat.
"This technology will be crucial to improving the LTE-B experience for our customers". Combined, the LANES solution and LTE Broadcast enabled PTT will provide PSAs and critical applications with prioritized access and preferential treatment for voice and data services.
These projects lay the foundations of the program we described in October 2016 and provide the foundation for Telstra's Network of the Future program which is essential to delivering our customers a brilliantly connected future.
In 2017, Telstra will undertake a production pilot of MooD enabled delivery of streaming content.

Cat M1 solutions are expected to be made commercially available this year, and will be supported across Telstra's 4G network and powered by Ericsson's Massive IoT network software.
Ericsson will supply equipment and services to support the program, which includes a nationwide optical network transformation and expansion.
Telstras LTE Broadcast capability allows PTT group calls to be delivered simultaneously to all members of a group call with high assurance, low latency and separated from regular mobile traffic.
