The British daily newspaper The Times has published their rankings of the world's top universities with less than 5,000 students: Italy and France dominate, each conquering three positions among the top ten.
South Korea's Pohang University of Science and Technology came in at the third place and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences at ninth.
Seeta Bhardwa of Times Higher Education said: "The Best Small Universities in the World for 2017 highlights that small universities provide high student satisfaction and good working relationships between students and their professors".
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has made it to the top 10 of Times Higher Education's (THE) Best Small Universities in the World ranking for 2017. Aside from the enrollment sizes, these rankings only considered schools that teach and conduct research in four or more of the following disciplines: Arts and Literature, Medicine, Engineering, Physics, and Social and Life Sciences.

In September 2016, IISc had climbed 50 positions in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2016-2017, earning a spot in the 201-250 band.
CalTech of the United States is the No. 1 in the 2017 rankings.
The ranking found that students from small universities preferred a more close-knit learning environment.
