Avatar's long-delayed sequels will begin hitting theaters in 2020

Some people truly believe that director James Cameron keeps pushing back the release dates on his four upcoming Avatar sequels, hoping the world implodes before he actually has to make them. The highly anticipated second film is now slated for a December 18, 2020 release date.

Director James Cameron and 20th Century Fox announced the big news on the official "Avatar" Facebook page on the morning of April 22, to coincide with Earth Day. We're making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5.

The franchise will take a three-year break before returning to the screen with two more installments, on December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025 respectively.
