George Osborne has announced he will quit as MP for the Cheshire constituency of Tatton following Prime Minister Theresa May's decision to call a snap General Election. "I want new challenges", he said.

Osborne, who has been representing Tatton in northwest England since 2001, served as chancellor of the exchequer under former prime minister David Cameron between 2010 and 2016, dealing with the aftermath of the global financial crisis.

He wrote: "I am stepping down from the House of Commons - for now".

The senior Tory had courted controversy by taking on a number of roles outside of his job as an MP, including as a public speaker, adviser to an asset management giant and latterly as editor of the Standard. "I've met the team there, and their energy and commitment to this great newspaper are positively infectious".

Osborne has very little experience of journalism.

He added "We, the Tatton Conservative Association, will now follow the Conservative Party rules and procedures and our members will select a new Conservative candidate to stand in this election".

His salary at the Standard has not been disclosed. The paper championed Osborne's efforts to bring National Football League to London and featured him on its most recent list of London's 1000 most influential people.
