Men catch 15-foot-long, 144-pound python in the Florida Everglades

Nicholas Banos and trapping partner Leonardo Sanchez were driving in their auto Saturday, keeping their eyes on the lookout, when they made the phenomenal find.

Last weekend, two South Florida men captured a 144-pound, 15 ft python, which is roughly the size of three Danny Devitos.

The python immediately slithered away from the two hunters toward the water and tangled itself around thick trees, Sanchez recalled.

Banos tried to grab the head of the snake which in turn snapped back right into his face.

"The first day of the challenge, we caught the biggest snake", snake trapper Nicholas Banos told WSVN. "And when we jumped at it, he goes and grabs it by the tail, the second, he starts to grab it, the snake starts to bee line into the trees, so he tells me, 'Go for the head, go for the head'". "I managed to grab the head and lay on it while it was all zig-zagged through the trees".

"Every one pulled out is one less out there, and every time we go out there and pull out another one, it's one less mammal, one less native mammal, native bird, or native whatever that's being taken out by one of these guys", python hunter Omar Gomez said.

It's all part of the Python Challenge to help protect the Everglades. Burmese pythons, one of the largest snake species on earth, are now known to be breeding in the park and spreading throughout south Florida.

"They're decimating the environment", Kalil said. We hunt to remove - catch and remove.

Banos said he wanted to shoot the snake on-site so there would be less of a threat, but for Sanchez, that would mean defeat. But having to kill it was a little rough for us.
