North Korea will 'test missiles weekly', senior official says

Vice President Mike Pence issued a warning to North Korea as he stood near the line that divides that country and South Korea. In August, it also successfully tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile some 500 kilometers off the coast of Japan, in a move which North Korean leader Kim Jong-un hailed as the "greatest success".

Trump's national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, indicated on Sunday that Trump was not considering military action against North Korea for now, even as a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier strike group was heading for the region.

After visiting the DMZ, Pence is expected to hold talks with South Korea's Acting President Hwang Kyo-Ahn in Seoul.

"It's time for us to undertake all actions we can, short of a military option, to try to resolve this peacefully", he said on ABC's "This Week" programme.

China and the United States are to work closer together regarding the North Korean missile crisis according to a senior security advisor in Washington.

The vice president's visit comes at a tense time.

Tensions between the U.S. and North Korea were raised after Pyongyang launched a missile on Sunday morning.

Trump acknowledged on Sunday that the softer line he has taken on China's management of its currency was linked to its help on North Korea.

In the wake of North Korea's failed medium-range missile test this weekend, President Donald Trump is willing to consider ordering "kinetic" military action, including a sudden strike, to counteract North Korea's destabilizing actions in the region, said a person familiar with the White House's thinking.

China is urging a return to negotiations over North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons after Vice President Mike Pence warned that the US has lost its patience with the regime.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow would not tolerate "missile adventures by Pyongyang" but a unilateral use of power by the U.S. would be "a very risky course". And as former Afghan President Hamid Karzai pointed out last week, Afghanistan is not a "testing ground" for the USA military.

On Sunday, Lt Gen HR McMaster, the U.S. top security adviser, said his country was working on a "range of options" with China, the first confirmation the two countries were co-operating to find a solution to the North Korean issue. He will also visit Jakarta and Sydney.

"The prevailing grave situation proves once again that the DPRK was entirely just when it increased in every way its military capabilities for self-defense and pre-emptive attack with a nuclear force as a pivot", he said.

Pence said the United States was going to rebuild its military, "restore the arsenal of democracy" and give troops the resources they needed to accomplish their mission.
