Christian Benteke's 14th goal of the season completed Crystal Palace's two-goal comeback to secure a point in a 2-2 home draw with Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday.
Leicester were denied the chance to head into Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg with Atletico Madrid on the back of a victory after squandering a two-goal lead at Selhurst Park.
Leicester is two points ahead of the London club in 12th place after mounting a feeble defense of its title.
The game had fired into life and the home side worked their way back onto level terms in the 70th minute when Benteke climbed above Yohan Benalouane to head home Townsend's cross.
Allardyce has attributed his side's recent run of results to much improved defensive displays but would not have been happy when Palace fell behind to a routine long-throw routine after just six minutes.

Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare: "There is a tinge of disappointment, especially when you go two up away from home".
But Sam Allardyce faces a stiff challenge in resurgent champions Leicester, who will be out for revenge after suffering a controversial mid-week Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Should they come up short against Atletico, who lead the tie 1-0, the Foxes players may rue their involvement in what was - at times - a frantic match.
Palace looked the more likely to push on and grab a victor at that point, but both bosses were ultimately content with a draw.
- Leicester City have picked up more points under Craig Shakespeare in his three Premier League away games (4) than in the previous 13 managed by Claudio Ranieri (3). In Leicester they were encountering the opposite; Palace's equal in being direct and playing with pace, and a team willing to remain deep and attack on the counter.
Bastia-Lyon, the game was called off because of numerous pitch invasions
Lyon's players were ushered down the tunnel as stewards held back the pitch invaders, causing a lengthy delay to kick-off. The Lyon players returned to the pitch almost 40 minutes later and the match eventually kicked off shortly before 1600.
"Make no mistake - they caused us problems with their aerial threat".
"We need to concentrate on Palace and try to get those points". I'm thinking that we still need the points.
