Families who sheltered fugitive Snowden looking for fast-track asylum to Canada

A group of refugees who sheltered former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden have been denied asylum in Hong Kong, according to their lawyer.

The seven people - four adults and their three children - allegedly helped hide Snowden when the fugitive was in the region in 2013 after he leaked documents revealing extensive US government surveillance.

The family of Sri Lankan asylum seeker Ajith Pushpakumara, a former soldier from Sri Lanka who has been living in Hong Kong since 2003, housed the former United States intelligence contractor for about two weeks in 2013, shortly after he leaked classified documents that showed the extension of mass online surveillance by the American and other governments.

Snowden spent two weeks hiding in Hong Kong in June 2013 after he leaked documents revealing extensive USA government surveillance information.

Their role in hiding Snowden was not known until the release of an Oliver Stone movie a year ago - "Snowden" - which shed light on his stay in Hong Kong.

White House: Yates was a 'political opponent of president'
Yates answer was that you don't want your National Security Adviser compromised by the Russians. Spicer said. "There were steps that they could have taken that - if that was truly a concern".

The families were seeking asylum in Hong Kong in 2013 when their lawyer asked them to shelter Snowden.

Tibbo said the Hong Kong government doesn't allow the United Nations to screen refugee applicants into the country. They have also applied for refugee status in Canada.

"The decisions are completely unreasonable", Tibbo added, describing the refusal to grant protection as "manifestly unfair". The four - Vanessa Rodel from the Philippines, former Sri Lankan soldier Ajith Pushpakumara, and Supun Kellapatha and Nadeeka Nonis, a married couple from Sri Lanka - now face possible detention or deportation. The families each freely allowed Snowden to stay with them for a short time after his disclosures became public but before his arrest was sought. I was tortured in my country.

"We now have less than two weeks to submit appeals before the families are deported".

But with fewer than one percent of cases successfully substantiated by city authorities, most refugees live in fear of deportation.

In Nevada, the ad shows a clip of Heller speaking at the town hall and says: "Call Senator Heller and tell him to keep his word". His Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida has been Trump's weekend White House for much of his young presidency.

Tibbo is also trying to raise $15,000 to cover legal costs associated with appealing the Hong Kong government's decision.

Marc-Andre Seguin, a Canadian lawyer representing the group in their Canadian application, told RTHK they appeared to have been targeted by Hong Kong immigration officials.

After just over a month in Hong Kong, Snowden boarded a flight to Russian Federation, where he has since been granted asylum.

The migrants "now find themselves at dire risk if sent back to their countries", said Dinah PoKempner, general counsel at Human Rights Watch.
