Greenpeace unfurls anti-Le Pen 'resist' banner on Eiffel Tower

It is the last day of campaigning in France before this weekend's presidential election, and as CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips reports, the two candidates aren't the only ones trying to influence voters.

Paris:Greenpeace activists on 5 May unfurled a huge banner with the French republican slogan "Liberty, Equality Fraternity" and the word "Resist" on the Eiffel Tower in Paris to protest against the campaign of far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen.

Paris's police chief called emergency talks after a dozen activists from the advocacy group climbed the north face of the vast metal-lattice structure, one of the world's most visited sites, to hang a banner carrying the French national motto, "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite" (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity). "Marine Le Pen doesn't respect liberty, doesn't push for equality for all and she doesn't show any fraternity for those who need it".

She criticised Mr Macron as the candidate of the elite and said the French have had enough of their political and economic situation.

9 killed, 40 injured in Afghan firing in Pakistan
The Chaman border crossing has been sealed as Pakistani and Afghan troops continue to exchange fire, the ISPR press release said. But Samim Khpalwak, a spokesman for the governor of Kandahar province, said the Pakistani team had strayed across the border.

It is "a warning against Marine Le Pen's program and the dangers it poses for NGOs and others", Julliard told reporters. The party has always been accused of racism and anti-Semitism. "So go and vote on Sunday, for this France, this democracy". "Because the success of France matters to the entire world", he said.

Trump has refused to directly comment on France's presidential race but has said last month's terrorist attack in Paris may boost Le Pen.

"Whoever is the toughest on radical Islamic terrorism, and whoever is the toughest at the borders, will do well in the election".

There has been intense anxiety in France over the possibility that viral misinformation or hackers could influence the presidential vote.

In recent years, Le Pen has tried to soften the profile of the National Front party founded by her father.

Mr Macron's camp said the former investment banker was the victim of a "cyber-misinformation campaign".

Le Pen herself was, according to BFM and photographs posted on social media, spirited away from the cathedral zone, flanked by bodyguards, head bowed.
