Now Judy malware infects 36.5 mn Android phones globally

A new malware called Judy has infected millions of Android smartphones, reported NDTV. The code would then use the infected phone to click on Google ads, generating fraudulent revenue for the attacker.

Check Point has said that the malware had reached an astonishing spread of millions of downloads and that some of the infected apps were actually present on Google Play Store for several years. However, the malware was later also found on some apps from other publishers too.

Experts fear some 41 malicious apps which were downloaded up to 18.5m times from the Google Play store have spread the malware.

Checkpoint explains that the viruses that came with these programmes went largely unnoticed because while the programmes were installed through Google, the official source, the malware code was downloaded from a non-Google server. However, the apps finding safe harbour on Android's play store for moret than a year does raise some serious questions about the security of the OS.

Fans quickly started tweeting in the wake of the attack, looking for those who may have been present. Abedi likely used an improvised explosive device, according to police.

The company that is behind the various Judy games that are on Google Play Store is called Kiniwini. Google says that their Play Store works around the clock to automatically identify malware and apps that can pose can risk to the user.

After this, Judy opened the malicious URL that imitated a PC browser in a hidden web page.

The malware belonged to a Korean company that manufactures apps for both iOS and Android devices. This would make the infection rate one of the most significant in the history of the Android app store.

Although the offending wares have since been removed from the Play Store itself, the malware is still out in the wild. After that, it looks up Google ads and repeatedly clicks on them, offering ad revenue for the hacker. However, the team found at least one of the apps that got an update in April 2016.

An extensive list of infected applications has been launched by the security firm and for avoiding any data loss, users should be careful while downloading any application from the play store.

Google refused to comment on Check Point's finding or why the malware had been allowed to undetected for so long.

"Upon clicking the ads, the malware author receives payment from the website developer, which pays for the illegitimate clicks and traffic", it added.
