Toronto stock index recovers from Thursday's decline, loonie stronger

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 11 points, or 0.05%, to 20,947, the S&P 500 gained one point, or 0.06%, to 2,389 and the Nasdaq Composite added three points, or 0.05%, to 6,076.

After a slow March, when hiring likely was held down by a winter storm, the United States economic engine added an estimated 211,000 net new positions in April while the jobless rate fell a tenth to 4.4 per cent, the lowest since May 2007, the Labor Department reported.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index unofficially closed down 146.44 points, or 0.94 per cent, at 15,396.70.

The S&P 500 is up 160.46 points, or 7.2 percent.

Apple was down 0.5 percent, and was the biggest drag on the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq.

Data on Thursday showed new applications for USA jobless benefits fell sharply last week and the number of Americans on unemployment rolls hit a 17-year low.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced 9.77 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,399.29.
