Trump will not announce Israel embassy move on trip

Next week he will be the first sitting US president to visit the Western Wall in the Old City, but his team rejected a request from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accompany him.

It later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognized by the worldwide community.

The exchange, reported by Israel's Channel 2 television, is threatening to create a fierce diplomatic storm as Israel gets ready for a visit by U.S. President Donald Trump later this week.

While out scouting the site with US representatives, the Israeli team requested that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accompany Trump and his family to the wall.

Then, according to the Channel 2 report, two members of the United States team told the Israeli team to leave.

Israeli ultra-Orthodox Jewish men participate in the Cohanim Priestly caste blessing during the Jewish holiday of Passover, in front of the Western Wall, the holiest site where Jews can pray in Jerusalem's old city, Monday, April 25, 2016.

"This isn't your territory". "The statement that the Western Wall is in an area in the West Bank was received with shock", an official told the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz.

That makes it all occupied territory, legally speaking, which is the basis on which the unnamed United States diplomat noted Israel didn't have a "sovereignty" case to be made on Trump wanting to visit a spot in the Old City.

With Trump backing away from his earlier support for hard-line Israeli positions and talking about a peace deal with the Palestinians, Israeli officials say they have no idea what ideas he may bring or concessions he may demand.

Officially, the Netanyahu office expressed "astonishment".

This began yesterday when, during planning of Trump's visit, USA diplomats said he wanted to make a "private" visit to the Western Wall. President will also pay a visit to Yad Vashem, Israel's Holocaust memorial.

Trump's visit to the Western Wall, which reportedly will include his Jewish daughter and son-in-law, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, has been billed as a private visit.

Trump's controversial new ambassador also presented his credentials to the Israeli president at a ceremony in Jerusalem.

In an interview published Wednesday in the "Israel Hayom" newspaper, Trump's new ambassador, David Friedman, said the focus is on restarting long-stalled negotiations.

After his arrival in Tel Aviv, Friedman visited the Western Wall, praying there and kissing the sacred site.

Trump had said during his campaign he would move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, which would effectively recognize the city as Israel's capital. The wall was involved in the war mentioned by the Congressman in the 6th District that took place in 1967.

Netanyahu responded by saying that moving the USA embassy would not harm the peace process, but would do the opposite.

"Jerusalem is the eternal and undivided capital of Israel".

WASHINGTON (CNN) - H.R. McMaster, national security adviser to President Donald Trump, declined to say Tuesday whether the Western Wall is in Israel, furthering a controversy over the site ahead of Trump's visit to the country next week.

By proclaiming that "no state has sovereignty" over Jerusalem, the Trump administration finds itself in a position that is wholly rejected by a bipartisan consensus of congressional leaders.
