US VP Pence says to North Korea: 'The sword stands ready'

The United States and China are working "closely" together over North Korea, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said on Tuesday, two days after a new missile test by Pyongyang.

A main difference between President Donald Trump's North Korea policy and that of his predecessor, Barack Obama, is the potential for using military force, a USA congressman said Tuesday.

At some point, USA intelligence will see a North Korean missile prepared for a test launch - and it may then be very tempting for a deeply frustrated president to show his muscle.

Earlier, US Vice President Mike Pence warned North Korea not to test the US, adding his country's "era of strategic patience" with Pyongyang was over.

North Korea will continue to test missiles on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis, Vice Foreign Minister Han Song-ryol said.

President Trump's Adviser Sebastian Gorka to Leave the White House
The Washington Examiner did not provide further details about the new position, save that it will not be in the State Department. When questioned, Trump Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders reportedly said there was "nothing" to announce about Gorka.

Pence, on a 10-day Asia trip that will also take him to Indonesia and Australia, said Trump hopes China will use its leverage to get its longtime ally North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program. China has also urged, to little response, that North Korea suspend its nuclear weapons and missile programs in return for the USA and South Korea halting annual wargames that the North considers a prelude to an invasion.

China, he said during an interview with KSL Newsradio's Doug Wright, has prioritized stability on the Korean peninsula over stopping North Korea's nuclear weapons program but is frustrated Kim is more hard to deal with than his father and grandfather.

Ms Bishop also repeated Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's call for China to increase diplomatic and economic pressure on North Korea.

38 North, a website that focuses on North Korea, said satellite images signal recent activity in preparation for another nuclear test. China remains North Korea's chief source of fuel and food imports, but Pyongyang seems to have calculated that Beijing's fears of a collapse of Kim Jong Un's hard-line communist regime override any such snubs. They worry that President Donald Trump's tough, unorthodox talk about North Korea's nuclear program is boosting already-high animosity between the rival Koreas. Wang's comments came amid a mounting war of words between Washington and Pyongyang.

Last year, Reuters reported that North Korea was using Sinotruk HOWO trucks to display a new mobile artillery system.

In Hyde Park at midday, 41 volleys in honour of the monarch's birthday were fired by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery. This year the Queen's official birthday falls on June 17, which will be marked by the ceremonial Trooping of the Colour.

It featured a senior official, Choe Ryong Hae, warning of "all-out war" if North Korea is attacked. Under rainfall, Pence later stood a few meters from the military demarcation line outside Freedom House, gazing at the North Korean soldiers across the border, and then peered at a deforested stretch of North Korea from a lookout post in the hillside.

On the heels of the multiple launch, South Korea's US-built THAAD missile defense system - which China vigorously opposes - arrives on the peninsula.

The US, meanwhile, has conducted missile defense drills with the South Korean and Japanese navies, sent its newest F-35 stealth fighters to train in South Korea, flown B-1 bombers to South Korea, and just Thursday commenced "Max Thunder", billed as the second-largest military flying exercise between US and South Korean forces. Pence's trip will also include stops in Indonesia, Australia and a visit with US troops in Hawaii.

The probability of Aegis interceptors missing a North Korean target would be embarrassing for the USA and embolden Pyongyang. North Korea is the strangest place I've visited, but it has made progress as a military threat.

The Pentagon has also dispatched the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson strike group to the Korean Peninsula. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said tensions need to be eased on the Korean Peninsula to bring the escalating dispute there to a peaceful resolution.
