British Airways' flights slowly resume after computer meltdown

In September, British Airways said a computer problem in its check-in systems caused delays and long lines at numerous airports.

Travellers spent the night sleeping on yoga mats spread on terminal floors on Saturday after BA cancelled all flights leaving the London hubs, and disruption continued into Sunday with dozens more services from Heathrow axed.

British Airways reported it would start operating long-haul flights from Heathrow on a full schedule and a "high proportion" of its short-haul flights on Monday.

In a video statement, Cruz apologized, saying "I know this has been a frightful time for customers".

British Airways' flights slowly resumed Sunday afternoon, but not without a weekend of ground turbulence for its passengers in London.

Megyn Kelly says important to 'shine a light' on Alex Jones
And family members of some of the 26 people who were killed in the Sandy Hook massacre are furious. You should be ashamed of yourselves for allowing this behavior".

The outage comes amid a busy weekend for travel, with Monday being a holiday in both the United Kingdom and the United States.

British Airways chief executive Alex Cruz has publically stated he will not resign and has refuted suggestions that the mass flight disruptions are a result of cutting costs.

Former Virgin Airlines spokesman Paul Charles said: "What seems remarkable is there was no back-up system kicking in within a few minutes system failing". Experts warned the knock-on effects could continue for several days.

The weekend's outage could cost BA £82 million (S$146 million), according to Goodbody Stockbrokers, which estimates that about 1,200 flights were affected and that 171,000 passengers qualify for damages. Of the 75,000 passengers who missed out on flights, around two-thirds would have been flown to their destinations by the end of Monday, he added.

He also emphatically stated that there was no evidence that the outage was caused by a cyberattack. He and other passengers arrived, but their luggage did not.

BA was accused of greed after the GMB union suggested the disruption could have been prevented if the beleaguered airline had not cut "hundreds of dedicated and loyal" IT staff and contracted the work to India in 2016.

In a tweet, Heathrow said it had "mobilized additional Heathrow colleagues to assist passengers at the terminals and give out free water and snacks".

British Airways has suffered other IT glitches recently, leading to severe delays for passengers in July and September past year.

Sundays generally are the least busy day for airlines, limiting the number of British Airways customers affected and making it easier to restore operations to normal.

Iberia and Air Nostrum, which like BA are part of the broader International Airlines Group and share some data, cancelled over 320 flights Monday.
