Iran Missile Strike Missed Target — Times of Israel

Iran said it fired missiles at Islamic State targets in Syria in retaliation for the jihadists' deadly attacks in Tehran last week, a rare strike signalling Iran's willingness to escalate its use of military power in the region's conflicts.

However, Israel's Channel 2 reported on June 19 that just one of the seven missiles which Iran fired reached its target in what was Iran's first missile attack overseas in more than 15 years.

A senior Iranian leader and confidant of the Islamic Republic's president is threatening to "depose" President Donald Trump if he continues his policy of confronting Iran and its terror proxy groups in the Middle East, according to recent comments that come as Iranian military leaders threaten missile strikes on USA forces and bases in the region.

Russia, like Iran an ally of President Bashar al-Assad, issued a warning of its own to the United States in response to the downing of the Syrian jet, saying on Monday it would view as targets any planes flying west of the Euphrates River, though it stopped short of saying it would shoot any down.

Gen. Ramezan Sharif, head of the IRGC Public Relations Department, told Tasnim news agency that the IRGC fired six mid-range ballistic missiles at multiple targets, within a range of 650 to 700 km.

"If the Iranians were trying to show their capabilities and to signal to Israel and to the Americans that these missiles are operational, the result was rather different", analyst for Israel's Channel 2 broadcaster Ehud Yaari said.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the $110 billion (100 billion euro) deal was aimed at helping the kingdom deal with "malign Iranian influence". The five IS militants who carried out the attack died.

"Today Daesh is fleeing Iraq and this is an admirable success", Khamenei said in reference to the jihadist group as he received Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in Tehran.

"We will retaliate against the terrorists and their supporters who martyred our people", the IRGC's second-in-command, Lieutenant General Hossein Salami, said after the Tehran attacks. Meanwhile, the US on Sunday shot down a Syrian aircraft for the first time, marking a new escalation of the conflict as Russian Federation warned it would consider any USA -led coalition planes in Syria west of the Euphrates River to be targets.

Senior Iranian officials, however, have pointed a finger at Saudi Arabia, Iran's Sunni regional rival.

Since Trump took office, his administration has described putting Iran "on notice" over the missile tests and put new economic sanctions on those allegedly involved with the program.

The missile also could strike Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. "I have one message for Iran: Don't threaten Israel" he warned.
