Iran warns missile attack on IS in Syria can be repeated

Iranian state-controlled television quoted IRGC spokesman Ramazan Sharif as making the comments on June 19, after Iran's elite force said it had fired missiles targeting the extremist group Islamic State (IS) in Syria following deadly attacks in Tehran earlier this month.

We review key events in Syria, including reports that Syrian and Iraqi troops have joined up across the border, a USA fighter jet shooting down a Syrian warplane and claims that Tehran launched missiles against a command base of the so-called Islamic State in Syria.

"The missile strikes at strongholds and headquarters of takfiri terrorists were simply a "soft slap" and a warning to awaken those who have failed so far to understand the realities of the region and their boundaries", the Foreign Ministry official remarked.

Battle for IS 'Capital' Raqqa Begins
On April 4, a U.S. military source says an airstrip has been prepared in Kurdish-controlled zones for use by C-17 cargo planes. The SDF first enters Tabqa on April 24, advancing north and cornering the jihadists in two neighborhoods near the Tabqa dam.

The missile strikes hit Deir-el-Zour in eastern Syria. Both are on the opposite sides of violent conflicts in Syria, Yemen and most recently Iran has come to the support of Qatar.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility.

US President Donald Trump meanwhile accuses Iran of backing terrorism - a charge it denies - and has threatened to tear up a 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers. While Iran has other ballistic missiles it says can reach longer distances, Sunday's strike appears to be the furthest carried out overseas.

Activists in Syria said they had no immediate information on damage or casualties from the strikes.
