Ivanka Trump must sit for lawsuit deposition over shoe design, judge rules

America's first daughter Ivanka Trump is expected to testify under oath in a lawsuit against her company which claims that a sandal designed by Trump's company was a knockoff, a judge decided Friday.

"Given the obvious time constraints that Ms. Trump must now have.it is nonetheless true that she is alleged to have personal involvement in the events at issue in this lawsuit", Judge Forrest said.

"Accordingly, she can not avoid a deposition in this matter".

In a statement filed to the court aimed to avoid submitting a deposition in the case, Trump said she played no part in designing the shoe. The company says the Ivanka Trump brand's "Hettie" shoe too closely resembles the design.

Her manufacturer has flatly rejected the charge.

"I had no involvement in the conception, design, production or sale of the 'Hettie Shoe'".

"The objective of the deposition is not for harassment, but because Ms. Trump possesses individual knowledge not only of what did or did not occur with regard to the shoes at issue, but of how she handles the supervision of her licensees generally, and what steps she takes to avoid licensees' intentional copying", Aquazzura's lawyers said.

The first daughter's attorneys previously argued that Trump, who serves as a senior, unpaid aide in her father's administration, should not be made to testify at all because she wasn't involved in the design process, the New York Daily News reported. However, Forrest allowed that the testimony is held in Washington D.C. and limited to two hours.

In ruling, the judge said: "While that declaration does assert a lack of personal knowledge of the design at issue, plaintiff asserts otherwise".

Aquazzura, in its lawsuit, said its shoe designs had "skyrocketed to fame in the fashion world" since the company was formed in 2011, with its footwear "coveted by fashionistas and celebrities alike".

Other shoes sold by Trump's IT Collection and named in the suit also appear strikingly similar to those created by Aquazzura. Aquazzura's "Wild Thing" shoe is priced at $785, with the soft suede sandal available in a "vivid lipstick red" color with fringe at the front and "sensuous ties that wrap around the ankle" adorned with "flirty tassels".
