Lewis Hamilton presented with race-worn Ayrton Senna helmet after Canada pole

On a track where he took his first Grand Prix victory with McLaren 10 years ago in 2007, Hamilton has now equalled the late Ayrton Senna for second all-time with 65 pole positions.

Triple world champion Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix, by dominating Saturday's qualifying session in Montreal.

Hamilton was in sensational form as he captured his sixth Montreal pole - which was also his 65th career pole in F1, moving him level with Senna for a share of second place in the record books, behind only Michael Schumacher on 68.

Valtteri Bottas said on Thursday that Mercedes had lightened its auto for this race and made some tweaks to the suspension in a bid to improve its form on the ultra-soft compound.

"I think we have the pace to win", said Mr. Vettel, who failed to improve his time on his final attempt in Q3. "Ayrton is the one who inspired me to be where I am". For many of you, Ayrton was your favourite driver. I am so honoured to be honoured by that family. "The team did a fantastic job to learn from our mistakes in the last race [when Hamilton finished seventh in Monaco to fall 25 points behind Vettel in the drivers' standings]". "To equal him; I just can't believe it".

"It's true we didn't have the best lap but Lewis was better today, I don't know maybe Kimi was struggling with the vehicle, otherwise we would've been pretty close".

The Finn revealed he was unable to put the ideal lap together, but his long-run pace is giving him encouragement ahead of Sunday's race.

"I was confident to go with the first lap", Vettel said. "It is true that we faced tough competition, but we could have been closer".

"Obviously, we'd like to be further forward, but I believe we maximized the potential today with a good, clean lap", Alonso said. A big, big thank you to the Senna family and to everyone here.

"It was a sexy lap", Hamilton said. "Montreal is a lovely place, and it's been home to me, I've grown with many fans who were teenagers when I started, and if I was going to get that special pole I wanted it to be here".

Coleman sets new college mark in 100m
Coleman is competing at the NCAA outdoor championships in Eugene, Oregon. Coleman's time was unheard of, but to be fair, he is unworldly fast.

"Today it was a bit tricky: for whatever reason yesterday we had been a bit more comfortable", said Raikkonen.

"I thought we could step it up and find a bit of time".

"It will be on my table, the centre-piece, in the living room and it will be the first thing you see when you come in". It just got better and better, and for the last run I thought we can step it up and we should be able to find a little bit of time, but I lost the vehicle a bit on Turn 2 and then I lost a bit the back. "The first priority tomorrow will be to finish the race".

For his part, third-place qualifier Bottas was short and to the point: "The race is tomorrow". I am proud to have got the Hamilton name here.

"I've got great support out here and I just wanted to give them a great lap and fortunately I did".
