Megyn Kelly says important to 'shine a light' on Alex Jones

A call to Kelly's publicist was not returned, but in a tweet responding to criticisms Sunday night, the host said the media needed to "shine a light" on who Jones is, particularly because of the layer of legitimacy he's receiving from the White House.

Jones' outlandish theories are not limited to Sandy Hook: the host has claimed in the past that 9/11 was an "inside job" and that the government was involved in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Cristina Hassinger, the daughter of the woman who was Sandy Hook's principal, told The New York Times that claims such as Jones' have caused survivors and families incredible pain.

And family members of some of the 26 people who were killed in the Sandy Hook massacre are furious.

On Monday afternoon, Mayor De Blasio weighed in as well: "Trump may promote Alex Jones, but NBC News shouldn't give a platform to someone who claims 9/11 & Sandy Hook were hoaxes".

"I felt zero attraction to Megyn Kelly", he said.

In a subsequent tweet she wrote: "You have a powerful platform". I encourage you to "shine light" on affirming the losses suffered here- NOT on a person who mocks those losses....

"They lit my face from the side and under, like you light somebody for a Halloween piece, for a horror movie", he said, repeatedly calling Kelly "the gorgon" and "Medusa". "This incessant need for ratings at the cost of the emotional well-being of our family is disgusting and disappointing". "He lives in a world where people don't think his sister's death is real. Sleeping Giants, the anonymous Twitter account known for shaming marketers into pulling their ads from sites like Breitbart News, criticized the NBC interview as a "naked grab for ratings". Besides saying she asked about subjects he didn't want to talk about, Jones told his InfoWars listeners on Thursday that Kelly was "not feminine, cold, robotic, dead".

"Sandy Hook?" Kelly asks Jones, not even giving those murdered in the shooting the respect of speaking in full sentences, revealing that it's merely a talking point to her. Kelly knows full well what Jones will say, but asks anyway to give millions the chance to hear it, among them the grieving families of the Sandy Hook victims.
