Watch leaders unite to condemn Theresa May's absence — BBC debate

Prime Minister Theresa May had decided not to debate Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on television.

Rudd made the comments while standing in for Prime Minister Theresa May at a live BBC debate for the leaders of seven British political parties. Apparently, Mrs May hadn't had time to attend the debate - but had had time to watch it.

May had faced criticism for her decision to not take part in the event.

"Now, Amber Rudd is up next". Yet here she was, the next morning, delivering her personal review of her stand-in's performance.

Nigel Morris in the i said that Mrs May owes her colleague "a large drink and a promise of promotion" after acting like a "Tory punchbag", adding that Mr Corbyn - who originally was not due to head to the debate - will not have regretted his change of heart. "You saw the coalition of chaos in action".

Scientists spot rare gravity waves for the third time
Stuart Shapiro, who works on computer simulations of gravitational waves at the University of IL at Urbana-Champaign, agrees. Still another instrument, in Japan , will come on line in "a gradual way", said Shoemaker, over the same time frame.

After the debate, Labour claimed Mr Corbyn had won.

Corbyn, who was accused by Rudd of relying on a "magic money tree" to fund his party's policies, had toned down his rhetoric for the occasion, says the New Stateman. "By contrast, Theresa May's refusal to take part showed her weakness".

Comparisons between the prime-time election debate and teatime game show the Weakest Link are rife within Thursday's papers.

"Amber, have you been to a food bank? Have you seen people sleeping around our stations?"

"Have you seen the levels of poverty that exist because of your government's conscious decisions on benefits?" She can't be bothered.

Trump repeats criticism of Germany, Merkel stands by stance
On her part, Merkel said India has proved to be a reliable partner and the two sides have been able to deepen cooperation. Merkel herself described her diplomatic encounter with the Americans as "very hard , not to say very unsatisfactory".

Plaid Cymru's Leanne Wood also came out of the election battle fairly unscathed, after earning particular praise for her cutting Brexit line to Mr Nuttall when asking if would refuse to pay up if he was going through a real divorce: "We all know about blokes like you". "We won't roll the dice".

"That is what happens if you demonise immigrants", he said. "She wants five years as prime minister and she thinks you'll give it to her, no questions asked - literally", he said.

It was Mr Robertson who led the attack on the Conservatives on their manifesto policies on social care and the winter fuel payment, demanding answers on who would lose out from the "dementia tax". "Even by the BBC's standards ... that audience was notably to the left of many people in this country". The prime minister is not here tonight.

"Labour candidate Chuka Umunna posted on Twitter: "@AmberRuddHR says "judge us by our record" on funding public services - the entire audience bursts out laughing. "We will make sure that our defence budget is well-funded and we will do that by having a strong economy and make sure we can do that by having a strong industry".

Mr Nuttall argued that Muslims should do more to combat terrorism while Mr Corbyn attacked him for singling out the community. Don't give her yours'.
