Base closure for explosives scare is defended

An Air Force base in MA has been partially evacuated after potentially explosive material was detected during a routine inspection of a truck at a gate.

At around 9 a.m. ET, security personnel discovered shut the gate, WCVB reports.

Portions of Hanscom Air Force Base in MA have been evacuated due to security concerns about a moving truck.

The Massachusetts State Police bomb squad was called in as part of the investigation.

"A standard screening of the truck and its cargo revealed indicators of potentially hazardous material", state police wrote in a statement. He told reporters Thursday: "Given the times we live in, we operate in an abundance of caution".

The base closed the gate and evacuated several nearby base facilities. The side of the truck had the logo "Big Foot Moving and Storage", which is a local moving company. "What we're trying to figure out is how some trace explosive materials ended up on this truck". The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad has responded and our Air Wing is responding as well.

The truck from Big Foot Moving and Storage was stopped at a gate to the base. The police also closed the exit from Route 2A to Hanscom while the situation is ongoing. A woman who answered the phone at the company's Acton headquarters said, "We don't know what's going on".

No injuries were reported during the incident.
