Israeli troops deploy in East Jerusalem, West Bank amid holy site violence

Israeli Major General Yoav Mordechai - head of COGAT, the defence ministry agency responsible for civilian affairs in the Palestinian territories - signalled changes to the policy were possible.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu held a phone conversation on Friday with his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Malki about the recent tension after Israel imposed restrictions on the Al-Aqsa compound.

After Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced freezing of Palestine's contacts with Israel, the nation's campaign for Jerusalem has effectively begun.

He said, "Israel does not have the right to install these metal detectors, because having sovereignty over al-Aqsa Mosque is our Palestinian right".

Some prisoners have been held in administrative detention for up to 11 years without any charges brought against them.

After nightfall, a Palestinian sneaked into a home in the Israeli settlement of Halamish in the West Bank and stabbed to death three Israelis.

In a post on Facebook, the stabber said he was deeply concerned about the recent violence at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in annexed East Jerusalem and wanted to protect it.

The Temple Mount/Noble Sanctuary was closed after last Friday's attack, and reopened Sunday for worshippers, visitors and tourists, with added security measures. Ramallah Hospital director Ahmad Betawi said the man died of shrapnel wounds but could not define what kind without an autopsy.

The violence was prompted by Israel's installation of metal detectors at entry points to Al-Aqsa compound in Beit-ul-Muqaddas. He did not say whether this means halting security coordination, which would have far-reaching repercussions and sharply raise tensions with Israel.

Also, three Palestinians were killed and tens were injured on Friday during the clashes with the Israeli security forces.

The ministers met amid mounting controversy at home, with some critics saying the government had acted without sufficiently considering the repercussions of introducing new security measures at the Holy Land's most sensitive shrine and the epicenter of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Abbas has said the freeze would remain in effect until the metal detectors have been removed. The Arab League said on Sunday that Israel was "playing with fire".

On Saturday, Abbas's political party, Fatah, praised the demonstrations against the Israeli metal detectors and asserted that the protests "will not stop until a Palestinian victory and the release of the holy sites from Israeli occupation".
