Police shoot Philippines mayor linked to drugs

In October, Samsudin Dimaukom, mayor of the town of Datu Saudi Ampatuan, was killed in a shoot-out in a police checkpoint on suspicion he and his security personnel were transporting illegal drugs, authorities said.

Parojinog is the third mayor to be killed the drug crackdown and the first to be killed during a drug raid.

Chief Superintendent Timoeteo Pacleb, director of the Northern Mindanao regional police, said one of the operations also resulted in the arrest of Ozamiz City Vice Mayor Nova Parojinog whose house is only a few meters away from his father's.

A simultaneous raid on the home of the mayor's brother, Ozamiz Councilor Ricardo "Ardot" Parojinog also yielded several firearms and explosives, various drug paraphernalia and shabu, an ABS-CBN source said.

Senior Supt. Jaysen C.de Guzman, the Misamis Occidental provincial police chief, confirmed to BusinessWorld in a phone interview that they seized firearms, rocket-propelled grenades, and illegal drugs from the Parojinog's properties.

A Philippine mayor, accused of having links to the illegal drugs trade, has become the latest official to be killed by police in the country's controversial war on drugs.

The Parojinogs denied the accusation.

Parojinog had been included in President Rodrigo Duterte's drug list.

Mayor Reynaldo Parojinig, his wife Susan Parojinig, brother Board Member Octavio Parojinig Jr., Camerman JR Millanar of Lumad TV and the Ozamiz Information center, Mona Parojinig, Miguel Del Victoria, Nestor Cabalan, Daniel Vasquez, "Inting", and four other unidentified people were killed in raids in barangays Baybay San Roque and Baybay Santa Cruz around 2:30 a.m., Ozamiz City stringer Thata Roxas from the Mindanaoan Broadcasting Channel told CNN Philippines.

Parojinog's daughter, Vice Mayor Nova Echaves, was arrested.

One of the people was the city's mayor.

"I am asking President Duterte to investigate this and the Senate of the Philippines", she said, as family members stirred her away from reporters.

Two other mayors Duterte mentioned in his so-called "drug list" were killed a year ago.

He has called on police and even civilians to kill drug users.
