Research: More sleep could prevent Alzheimer's

Plus, new research suggests that disrupting sleep during certain parts of the night can quickly raise levels of Alzheimer's-related proteins in the brain and spinal fluid. If disrupted nights cause Alzheimer's biomarker levels to spike, they said, that could further worsen sleep, which could then cause more buildup. "I do think chronic sleep disruption increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease". One night of disrupted sleep increased amyloid beta, CBS News reported.

But it hasn't been clear exactly what aspect of sleep disruption caused the build-up of the protein.

"Because brain cells release amyloid beta during activity, we think if the brain cells can't rest the way they're supposed to and get that deep sleep, they produce a relative excess of amyloid", Ju said. Holtzman, Washington University sleep medicine physician Yo-El Ju and colleagues recruited 17 volunteers, all healthy adults between ages 35 and 65, who had no sleep disorders.

This All-Girl Robotics Team From Afghanistan Was Denied US Visas
Still, the team built a ball-sorting robot on a shortened timeline; their kit only arrived three weeks ago. Just 112 were granted in May, 2017; 780 visas were issued to visitors from Iraq and 4,067 from Pakistan.

Holtzman and the study's co-first author, Dr Yo-El Ju, invited nearly 20 participants aged between 35 and 65 into the School of Medicine's sleep room for a night. Half slept with headphones on, while the other half of the group were sent a series of beeps that gradually got louder and forced the participants from a deep sleep into a shallower sleep. In the second session, slow-wave sleep was not interrupted. "Our study looked not only for amyloid but for other biological markers in the spinal fluid as well".

In the short term, a bad night's sleep won't do much worse than leave you feeling groggy and grumpy. Participants were surveyed about sleep quality.

Bendlin did note that, "It's still unclear if sleep may affect the development of the disease or if the disease affects the quality of sleep".

However both lawsuits argue that DeVos did not claim or make the case that any damage CAPPS would suffer would be irreparable. These rules provide "updates to a regulation known as the borrower defense to repayment", which was established in the 1990s.

Dr. Rao noted that while the study shows a link between sleep and Alzheimers its a bit of a ‘chicken and egg scenario, in that doctors arent sure what comes first – the Alzheimers or the sleep problems. Tau levels didn't appear to increase in a single night, but participants who'd slept poorly in the week leading up to the spinal tap (as measured by sleep monitors they'd worn at home) showed a spike in tau levels.

Study author Dr David Holtzman said: "We showed that poor sleep is associated with higher levels of two Alzheimer's-associated proteins".
