Shooting at Israeli Embassy in Jordan Capital Amman, 2 Dead

A security guard at the Israeli embassy in Amman, Jordan, opened fire killing two Jordanians after one of them attacked him with a screwdriver, Israel's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The source said that the Jordanian man was gunshot wounded to his shoulder while the Israeli had multiple stab wounds to the abdomen.

The Foreign Ministry said the security officer has diplomatic immunity from "investigation and imprisonment", according to the Vienna Convention.

The fortress-like embassy resides in the Rabae district of Amman and is protected by Jordanian gendarmes.

Israel captured East Jerusalem, along with its holy sites, from Jordan in the 1967 war, and annexed the area in a move that was never internationally recognized.

A news website linked to the Jordanian military reported that Jordan is refusing to let the guard leave before he is questioned.

A significant percentage of Jordan's population is of Palestinian origin and a Jordanian religious authority, the Waqf, administers the Temple Mount/Noble Sanctuary. Israeli officials refused to comment explicitly on the dispute, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alluded to it in public remarks.

In September 2011, seven months after the popular uprising in Egypt, hundreds of protesters against Egypt's ruling generals, broke into the Israeli embassy in Cairo tearing down large sections of a security wall.

The security guard shot dead the Jordanian attacker, while a second Jordanian there at the time was also killed - apparently by accident.

He added: "Jordanians need to calm the situation in Amman".

Slight Rise in June Unemployment Rate
Gedney speculates the department's numbers for mining and logging employment are likely being underestimated. The June 2017 rate also was down three-tenths of a percentage point from the June 2016 figure, 4 percent.

The second Jordanian, who later died, was the building's landlord. The guard shot and killed the assailant. Netanyahu said that the government was "carrying out discussions at all levels with security officials in Israel and the government in Amman in order to bring this situation to a resolution".

The shooting has reportedly been triggered when the security guard was attacked by a Jordanian carpenter with a screwdriver.

Israel says the measures are meant to prevent more attacks but Palestinians allege they are an Israeli attempt to control the Muslim-administrated site and have launched mass protests.

Meanwhile, the security Cabinet reached no decision after a six-hour meeting on how to defuse the crisis over the Jerusalem shrine, Israeli media said. The 40-year-old was described as being in a moderate to severe condition, it was unclear if his injuries were life-threatening. "He later died of his wounds", the statement said.

The drama played out as President Donald Trump's Mideast envoy, Jason Greenblatt, headed to the Holy Land on Monday.
