Theresa May says election night made her 'shed a little tear'

"My husband watched it for me and came and told me and I was shocked at the result that had come through in the exit poll".

Theresa May says she shed a "little tear" when she saw the exit poll on election night that forecast her General Election gamble would backfire.

The Prime Minister said she was shocked and devastated by the election result after her husband Philip told her she was on track to lose seats despite predictions she would win a huge majority.

May had called the mid-term election on June 8 in the hope of winning a larger majority than the slender one the Conservatives had won in the 2015 election, but ended up losing it, and having to enter into a controversial coalition with the Democratic Unionist Party to stay in power.

May told Emma Barnett on Radio 5 Live on Thursday morning that "I felt devastated" over the result. "It took a few minutes for it to sink in what it was telling me".

Iron ore is among China's biggest imports from the North after it stopped buying coal this year due to the sanctions. He said Chinese imports from the North fell 36.5 percent in March, 41.6 percent in April and 31.6 percent in May.

"My husband gave me a hug and then I got on the phone to CCHQ, the Conservative party, to find out what had happened".

May said she had no idea it wasn't going her way.

In the BBC interview released Thursday, May said that although she was aware the campaign was not "going perfectly", she said messages being passed on to her suggested "we were going to get a better result than we did".

Asked whether she cried, she said: "Yes, a little tear".

But she insisted she never considered resigning from Number 10 despite the humiliating election result, saying: "I felt I had a responsibility to ensure the country had a government".

"What I am focusing on now, is over the next few years making sure that we do the Brexit negotiations we make a success of it but also that we open up those other opportunities", May said. "I think it was the right thing to do at the time", she said.

She added: "People can smell blood and that is exactly what is going on in the corridors of power so to speak".

May said: "One of the important things with that deal, was that we were very clear that the Conservative party was not going to row back at all in anything we've done on the equalities agenda".
