Aldi stops selling eggs in Germany over food safety scare

Supermarkets in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and Switzerland have pulled millions of eggs from the shelves after fipronil, a substance potentially unsafe to humans, was found in them.

"It's now up to the Swedish, Swiss, French and to the United Kingdom to check because all these eggs are traceable and trackable", Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen told reporters.

This afternoon, the agency announced: "The Food Standards Agency is committed to making sure that food is safe".

Around 85% of eggs consumed in Britain are home-produced.

Belgium meanwhile vowed full transparency about why it kept the scandal secret despite originally learning in June about the problem involving fipronil, a substance potentially risky to humans.

No link between raids and polls: Jaitley
The senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel is trying for his fifth re-election to the Upper House of Parliament from Gujarat. The BJP has fielded party president Amit Shah, Union Minister Smriti Irani and Balwantsinh Rajput against Ahmed Patel.

It said that the number of eggs involved represents about 0.0001 per cent of the eggs imported into the United Kingdom each year.

"We are working closely with the businesses that have received eggs from affected farms".

The agency is "urgently investigating" the issue, but to the best of their knowledge, the affected products are no longer on shelves.

After Belgium failed to notify the European Union executive immediately on an ongoing investigation to a Belgian company for creating an illegal mite-killer containing fipronil, delayed to break the news to the Berlaymont.

Some 300,000 hens from farms where fipronil was found have already been slaughtered and the final total could be as high as one million, one company charged with destroying infected hens told broadcaster NOS.

Dolores Park Shooting in San Francisco Injures 3
Juhasz said many parents and children did not react fast enough to the danger because they thought the gunshots were fireworks. Hatter , a witness who goes by that name, told the SF Gate that he saw some park regulars confront the group of men.

The poultry was then sold to about 180 Dutch farms, which have all had their egg sales stopped temporarily.

The European Union on Monday notified the food safety authorities in Britain, France, Sweden and Switzerland to be on the lookout for contamination in eggs after a food scare in Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

Belgian officials admitted on Saturday they had kept the problem under wraps and failed to trigger the EU's global food safety alert system, but said it was because of a fraud probe.

Fipronil is an insecticide used to combat insects such as fleas, lice, ticks, cockroaches and mites.

Millions of chickens could be culled in the Netherlands over fears of insecticide-tainted eggs, an industry body said as Belgium vowed full transparency today about why it kept the scandal secret.

Germany: One killed, four injured after knife attack in Hamburg supermarket
They are not ascribing a motive to the attack now , with German media suggesting terror and robbery as possibilities. The Germany police could not confirm witness reports that the suspect had shouted "Allahu Akbar" in the supermarket.

But it is banned from being used to treat animals destined for human consumption, such as chickens.
