Apple Plans To Spend $1 Billion On Original Content

According to sources speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Apple plans to use this $1 billion investment to secure up to ten high-caliber TV series. Not only is Amazon's growth in digital video viewer numbers driven by the rollout of its standalone streaming service, but the company's increased investment in original content has played a role as well. Apparently, Apple SVP Eddy Cue has ambitions to offer shows that rival HBO's Game of Thrones.

Also new today are two new Apple ads promoting Carpool Karaoke.

At Least Seven Dead In Attacks On UN In Africa
However, the militants have also spread to southern Mali, along the border with Burkina Faso. There is no clarity on how many attackers were killed by the peacekeepers.

Let's face it, Apple's initial attempt hasn't exactly been triumphant. Others have a lot of questions about how Apple will distribute its shows. That's a budget that begins to approach those of dedicated content creators like HBO, which spent just around twice that previous year on its own shows. The fund is also said to be controlled by veterans in Hollywood, such as Jamie Erlicht and Zack van Amburg who were hired by Apple back in June.

Sure, Apple is just getting started with original TV shows. The company could spend around $2 million per episode for comedy shows, or a drama for $5 million per episode, according to The Verge. For Netflix, that includes Orange is the new Black, House of Cards, Narcos, and more. The alleged $1 billion budget will be put toward acquiring and then producing these original shows. That means if they want to pursue a Game of Thrones-like original series that's super-ambitious and expensive, or get into business with big-name directors, showrunners or actors, or even pursue theatrical releases, they can afford to. Though both shows have received very poor critical reception, this surely has not discouraged Apple.

Apple will apparently update its Apple TV later on this year, bringing 4K support and a host of design and feature updates. The latest set-up box will be announced alongside the new iPhone and Apple Watch models. This comes as it seeks to double revenue by 2020 from its services business including Apple Music and App Store.
