As Myanmar fighting swells, a desperate flight to the border

Myanmar's government said it evacuated at least 4,000 non-Muslim villagers in Rakhine state, as thousands of Rohingya, mostly women and children, sought to flee the violence.

In February, Francis issued a stinging criticism of the treatment of Myanmar's Rohingya community, saying they had been tortured and killed simply because they wanted to keep their culture and Muslim faith.

Myanmar authorities have previously said they have links to militants trained by the Pakistani Taliban.

Dhaka, Aug 28 Bangladesh today protested Myanmar's description of Rohingya militants as "Bengal terrorists" and said none of its citizens have crossed the border to carry out such activities.

Still, more than 2,000 Rohingya entered Bangladesh overnight through two points at Teknaf in Cox's Bazar district, said Jalal Ahmed, a local government official at the Kharangakhali border point. "In addition, the deportation of Rohingya Muslims back to Myanmar would also be a violation of Article 7 of the ICCPR in as much as it prohibits states to extradite, deport, expel or otherwise remove a person from their territory, where there are substantial grounds for believing that there is a real risk of irreparable harm".

In India, an estimated 40,000 Rohingya refugees live in different states.

At least 104 people, including 12 members of the security forces, have been killed in Rakhine state after Rohingya militants called the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army attacked police on Friday, the bloodiest fighting since hostilities erupted past year.

Most Rohingya are denied citizenship and its rights.

Centhra notes that there have been calls made by certain quarters for the scrapping of the non-interference clause in the Asean Charter to allow member states to intervene in Myanmar to stop the collective punishment, persecution, and violence against the Rohingya Muslim minority, which Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak characterised past year as genocide.

Trump's Rehash of His Charlottesville Remarks Was Deceitful and Self-Destructive
John McCain shocked many when he cast the deciding vote on the so-called "skinny repeal", a fact that Trump is still furious over. And Faith Graham, the 13-year-old daughter of Robert Graham, the former state GOP chairman, led the Pledge of Allegiance.

One government source said the term meant Myanmar was implying Bangladesh was a terrorist country, "this is a new thing and the government is very unhappy about it", the source said.

While Asean members continue, disappointingly, to turn a blind eye, even Pope Francis has condemned the renewed violence and called for an end to the persecution of Rohingya Muslims, which Centhra welcomes.

According to the United Nations, around 87,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh following the start of the latest crisis in October.

Bangladesh border guards returned some people and cordoned some groups in areas inside the Bangladesh border, it said.

On Friday, militants from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), which claims to be fighting for the rights of Rohingya people - a Muslim minority long-persecuted by Myanmar's Buddhist majority - attacked about 25 police posts in the country's west.
