Central Intelligence Agency chief: 'Nothing imminent' in standoff with N Korea

The U.S.is not on the brink of nuclear war with North Korea, but the threat of an armed conflict is the highest it's been in 10 years, President Trump's top national security officials said Sunday. "He conducted two in July, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was another missile test", Pompeo said to Fox News on Sunday.

"I am quite confident that [North Korean leader Kim Jong-un] will continue to try to develop his missile program, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was another missile test", Pompeo stated.

"Each time they test another missile, or if they should conduct a nuclear weapons text, they develop expertise, they expend the envelope".

US National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster echoed the tenor of Pompeo's remarks, saying the threat posed by North Korea is "coming to a head", but adding in an interview on ABC, "we're not closer to war than a week ago".

"The US military is locked and loaded every day", Mr McMaster said, repeating Mr Trump's threat.

"There's no intelligence indicating we're on the cusp of a nuclear war", Pompeo said.

Pompeo said "there's nothing imminent today", in response to a question about how anxious should people be over the escalating tensions.
