FDA looks to reduce nicotine in cigarettes

Tobacco stocks have continued to slide after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday announced to plans to slash the amount of nicotine allowed in cigarettes to make them less addictive and easier to quit.

Washington, London- The FDA is seeking to cut nicotine in cigarettes, trying to make them less addictive.

Many specialists, including health experts at Public Health England, think e-cigarettes, which contain nicotine but no tobacco, are a lower-risk alternative to smoking.

Republican senators introduce bill sharply limiting legal immigration
Sonny Perdue of Georgia will be appearing alongside President Trump at the White House later this morning for an announcement. Any changes along the lines of the proposed bill would require support from moderate Republican senators such as Sens.

This would be just the first step in a sweeping review of the tobacco industry's regulations by the agency, with the goal of encouraging the development of new products that are less risky than cigarettes. A concern by study investigators was that participants would do the opposite, i.e. smoke more cigarettes to compensate for the lower nicotine levels; that did not happen.

Even though e-cigarettes or vapes have helped smokers to reduce smoking or helped them in quitting, it is still not clear whether it's a safe option for them for using it.

He said Gottlieb's stance suggested "balancing regulation of existing products with encouraging innovation for future less harmful options" and that investors should "never underestimate the lobbying power of the mighty tobacco industry". Following up on that, the FDA has announced a regulatory plan that could shift the trajectory on tobacco-related disease and death.

Another reason is that World Health Organization has said that no specific amount of nicotine has yet been identified as the absolute threshold for addiction. In fact, based on the FDA's proposed approach to potentially mandate non-addictive levels of nicotine in tobacco cigarettes, 22nd Century Group might be the only company that can deliver such a product. The risk of developing lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, emphysema, mouth cancer, loss of limbs, arterial disease and many other diseases associated with tobacco is reduced compared to the danger if you continue to smoke. But what causes maximum damage is the presence of nicotine, as it is the one responsible for causing addiction.

The agency will also review its position on premium cigars, reopening a discussion on special regulations for these cigars, he said.

"On the contrary, the U.S. is the first country to potentially adopt a "risk continuum" approach, accelerate the switch to Novel Nicotine Products and to encourage developing lower-risk offerings".

Similar lines have been experienced at Melbourne Airport , with authorities warning that the delays will continue. Australia's PM said on Sunday: "The threat of terrorism is very real".
