How North Korea Crisis Could Impact US Dollar

"First, we simply do not have a comprehensive or precise picture of the North Korean nuclear programme, especially when it comes to the number of weapons and delivery vehicles - we do not know for sure where they are located or how well they are protected", a 2016 Stratfor report said.

Trump warned North Korea last week it would face "fire and fury" if it threatened the United States, prompting North Korea to say it was considering plans to fire missiles towards Guam.

In an effort to jumpstart diplomacy, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Thursday he would consider sending a special envoy to North Korea for talks if the North stops its missile and nuclear tests.

- Although North Korea has more than a million troops, hundreds of military aircraft and air defence systems, experts question their capabilities. Moreover, there's no real way to be confident a USA -led military strike could destroy all of the dispersed and hidden components of North Korea's illicit programs.

The United States has been hoping China can press the North to rein in its weapons programs, something the top USA general reiterated in talks in Beijing this week.

Pence Cuts Short Trip To South America
This time it was Macri that warned the USA against military action saying "the way to go is not the use of force". But Pence left no daylight between himself and his boss, saying: 'I stand with the president'.

South Korea's newly-elected Red Cross society chief on Friday re-urged the North Korea to respond to Seoul's earlier dialogue offer to discuss humanitarian issues between the two sides, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

"In the interest of regional stability, he said the US views with growing urgency the need for China to increase pressure on the North Korean regime", the spokesman said.

U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, left, meets with the Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission Gen. Fan Chanlong at the Bayi Building in Beijing, China, Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017. I said security from whom. He added that the idea that air-dropping South Korean DVDs and music into North Korea would eventually sway the population against Kim "overestimates the draw of material goods over nationalism and national identity".

The Korean Peninsula has been locked in a cycle of military tensions since the 1950-1953 Korean War, which ended in an armistice.

South Korea and the USA are set to hold annual military drills, dubbed "Ulchi-Freedom Guardian", from next week.

Iran's Parliament Increases Spending On Missile Program
Tehran says this violates the 2015 nuclear deal, which US President Donald Trump has called "the worst ever" and threatened to tear up.

"It reinforces the images of the strides North Korea made in missile capability and how North Korea is undaunted by any challenges to its sovereignty." he said. Instead, the administration on Monday called for an investigation of China's theft of technology and trade secrets - a serious problem for American companies but not one that requires an immediate penalty.

While North Korean media said USA military exercises tested Kim's "self-restraint", the odds of the country firing a missile toward Guam remain slim. A second Korean war is in no one's interest.

Americans have long perceived North Korea as a threat, but more acutely so in the last few weeks, according to recent polling.

Even though North Korea has backed off its plans to launch a missile strike near Guam this month, it may just be a matter of time before things re-escalate. The exercises also upset China, which says they do nothing to ease tension.
