Kenyan Opposition Leader Claims Election Systems Were Hacked Following Initial Results

A dispute over election results in Kenya that has pitted supporters of incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta against his rival, Raila Odinga, intensified on Thursday, with the opposition presenting what it says is evidence of tampering with the electronic voting system.

The Opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) has dismissed Tuesday's election results released by the electoral commission.

At least five people were killed in separate incidents on Wednesday during riots that followed the general elections in Kenya, APA reports quoting Anadolu Agency.

Concerns remained on Friday that allegations of fraud could spark ethnically based violence in an echo of the 2007 elections, when Odinga was defeated by Mwai Kibaki.

Provisional results show President Uhuru Kenyatta with a strong lead, though opposition candidate Raila Odinga claims the vote was hacked. "But we believe that the election's commission in Kenya has put together a process that will allow each and every vote's integrity to be proven", Kerry said, adding that there were "little aberrations here and there". He said the opposition's hacking complaints should be looked into by the IEBC, saying this was not the mandate of observers.

Kenya's shilling firmed and bond prices rose on early results, but analysts said gains could be fragile. "This time we caught them", he tweeted.

On the other hand, local authorities called for calm and urged the population to continue their usual activities and wait for the official results by the committee, being Kenyatta considered as a victor by margin of 10 percentage points.

Election commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati acknowledged that an attempt to hack the voting system was undertaken on polling day, but that it failed.

Meanwhile, various election monitoring groups, including the African Union group led by a former South African president, Thabo Mbeki, have issued statements calling the election peaceful and credible.

Odinga posted 50 pages of computer logs online to support his hacking claims, but they were "inconclusive", according to Matt Bernhard, who studies computer security in election systems at the University of MI.

Demonstrator Sebastian Omolo, a supporter of Mr Odinga, said: 'He is not accepting the results and that is why we are on the streets but police have started shooting'. "Nobody knows what he wants". At least three people were killed in the clashes.
