Kenyan police probe murder of IEBC official Christopher Msando

The man in charge of Kenya's computerized voting system has been found dead just days before the 8 August elections.

Wafula Chebukati, chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had reported on Saturday that Chris Msando who worked as IEBC's acting director of information and communications technology, had gone missing since Friday.

According to the Nairobi newspaper, Mr. Msando suffered injuries on his head and stomach in addition to a broken arm and several cut wounds on his hands.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, seeking a second and final five-year term, is running against opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The Kenya Integrated Electoral Management System (KIEMS) will be used to identify voters and transmit results.

Three dead in shootout at Moscow court
The group got its name after the violent computer game, as it was accused of murdering drivers on roads near the Russian capital. More than 20 gunshots were fired at a court in the Moscow region in Russian Federation on Tuesday, injuring several people.

Msando's death should be "urgently" investigated, Human Rights Watch said in a statement.

It's hard to describe how thoroughly this turn of events crushes hopes that this election would inch Kenya towards a more robust democracy - a reminder that no matter how badly most Kenyans reject violence, those with power can inflict wanton damage at will.

Some 1,000 people were killed after the 2007 presidential vote that global observers said had serious cases of irregularities. "I demand from the government that they provide security for all members of the IEBC for them to give Kenya free and fair elections".

Faki further reaffirmed the African Union's support for the sake of democratic, credible and peaceful elections.

"The murder has jeopardised Kenyan's faith in the credibility of the electoral process", Musalia Mudavadi, an ally of Mr Odinga said, as he called for an worldwide expert to oversee electronic vote-counting systems.

"We learned in shock, the killing and murder of our employee, Chris Msando".

"Even as the investigation gets on its way, we remind the state of its duty to take whatever necessary measures it finds possible to secure the safety of IEBC commissioners and all its staff", Kegoro said.

He had publicly assured people that the election results would not be tampered with.

Chebukati said the IEBC will carry on Msando's work. Political protests and ethnic violence killed more than 1,200 people.
