One tonne of contaminated egg product found in Romania

Dutch police on Thursday arrested two company directors suspected of playing a significant role in a sprawling worldwide scandal involving fipronil contamination in eggs, reported Politico.

But junior economic affairs minister Martijn van Dam and health minister Edith Schippers said in a letter to parliament that the tip concerned the use of the chemical as a disinfectant and that there was no reason to assume the chemical could end up in the eggs.

Similarly, early last month, a small quantity of liquid pasteurised egg - with a "use-by" date of July 20 - was supplied to a number of food businesses for use in bakery products, the FSAI added. The retailers affected are Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda, across a total of 11 products.

Tensions have been running high between ministers and junior ministers in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany ever since the harmful delousing pesticide, thought to have sold by Dutch company Chickfriend, was found in the eggs.

Most eggs imported into the United Kingdom are used by caterers, or are processed for food manufacturers and other businesses for use in products with eggs as an ingredient.

Fipronil is a popular insecticide to treat pets for fleas and ticks but it is forbidden for use in the food chain.

The agency said on Thursday the Danish distributor, Danaeg Products, has been ordered to recall the eggs because "the content is illegal", but "not dangerous".

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) in Britain said it was very unlikely that there was a risk to public health.

If consumed in large amounts, the insecticide is considered to be "quite hazardous" according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), as it can severely affect people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands.

The Netherlands' public prosecutors' office said Thursday that it had arrested two directors of the Dutch business under investigation for selling a fipronil treatment.

The U.K. raised its estimate of eggs contaminated by the unauthorized pesticide fipronil, with the outbreak believed to have affected some products made by major supermarkets.

Belgian authorities discovered the traces of fipronil in June, Colin reported, and European Union officials say Belgium sent a message to the Netherlands about it on July 6.

More than 100 poultry farms were closed during the investigation and at least 26 suspects were identified.

The arrests came after coordinated raids with Belgian authorities at eight locations across The Netherlands with the assistance of Europe's policing and judicial agencies Europol and Eurojust.
