Sensex tanks 216 points; Nifty below 10000

The NSE Nifty50, which closed above the psychologically important 10,000-point mark for the first time on July 26, slipped to below that level by the day's close.

The broader markets underperformed benchmarks as the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices fell 1.7 percent each as investors were still reportedly unwinding their leveraged positions.

The 50-share Nifty opened lower 9,961.15 and moved in a range of 9,969.80 and 9,893.05 before concluding at 9,908.05 a drop of 70.50 points, or 0.71 per cent, from its last close.

In Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei fell 1.28 per cent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.66 per cent in early trade on Wednesday (9 August).

Major Sensex gainers on Wednesday were: NTPC, up 1.25 per cent at Rs 173.55; ONGC, up 0.98 per cent at Rs 165.55; Asian Paints, up 0.84 per cent at Rs 1,155.25; HDFC, up 0.63 per cent at Rs 1,731.45; and Infosys, up 0.50 per cent at Rs 969.45.
