Three dead in shootout at Moscow court

Some of the 11 defendants accused of murdering more than a dozen motorists are reported by Russian media to have tried to grab firearms from security officers and attempted to take hostages.

Russia's Investigative Committee, the country's chief investigative body, said in a statement on Tuesday the incident took place when five handcuffed defendants tried to escape as they were escorted by two guards at the Moscow Regional Court.

Three law enforcement officers were hurt, one of them with a gunshot wound.

The group got its name after the violent computer game, as it was accused of murdering drivers on roads near the Russian capital.

In November 2014, the authorities arrested five gang members and killed their leader, an Uzbek citizen.

A correspondent from Rossiya 24 state television reported that the defendants took the opportunity to attack when the lift got stuck between floors, adding that they severely beat up a female convoy guard for 15 minutes.

Nine suspected members of the gang have been on trial since last summer, and prosecutors have asked for life sentences.

More than 20 gunshots were fired at a court in the Moscow region in Russian Federation on Tuesday, injuring several people.

A total of nine defendants, all from Central Asia, are on trial.
