US Defense Secretary issues stark warning to North Korea

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis warned North Korea Wednesday to stop provocations that could bring destruction to its regime and its people.

Britain's UN ambassador said the United Kingdom "stands shoulder to shoulder with the United States" in tackling the nuclear threat from North Korea and making sure it can not pursue its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to unleash "fire and fury" if the communist nation continues to threaten his country. "They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen".

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that North Korea had obtained the capability of creating a nuclear warhead small enough to place on a missile.

Another official quoted by Reuters noted that the plan was "fairly well along" by the time the Australian police raids took place. Australian authorities have said they thwarted a credible terrorist plot to down an airplane by smuggling a device onboard.

"While our State Department is making every effort to resolve this global threat through diplomatic means, it must be noted that the combined allied militaries now possess the most precise, rehearsed and robust defensive and offensive capabilities on Earth", the secretary warned.

Mattis' statements on Wednesday added to the increasingly heated rhetoric between North Korea and the United States.

In September 2016, the regime tested a bomb with a blast estimated at twice the size of the one detonated over Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II. It is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before.... Before Trump's tweets on the nuclear arsenal, Tillerson arrived in Guam on a previously scheduled visit after telling reporters he did not believe there was an imminent threat from North Korea and "Americans should sleep well at night".

On Wednesday Trump tweeted the U.S. nuclear arsenal was "stronger and more powerful than ever before" but he hoped it never needed to be used.

It may also lie in using soft power to convince North Koreans they should scrap his regime.

DPRK stands for Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the official name of North Korea. The U.N. Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Saturday.

Republican senators introduce bill sharply limiting legal immigration
Sonny Perdue of Georgia will be appearing alongside President Trump at the White House later this morning for an announcement. Any changes along the lines of the proposed bill would require support from moderate Republican senators such as Sens.

Trump's remarks came amid reports that North Korea was nearing to obtain an atomic weapon that can strike the US. It says its ICBMs are a legitimate means of defense against perceived US hostility, including joint military drills with South Korea.
