Japan confirms North Korea has conducted 6th nuclear test

There is no sign, though, that China is willing yet to see that "firm will" go beyond United Nations sanctions, which recently clamped down on seafood and iron ore exports, in addition to the coal and minerals that are already banned from crossing the border.

The U.S Geological Survey said it had recorded a 6.3 magnitude natural disaster exactly at noon Sunday local time, near North Korea's known nuclear test site in the country's northeast region.

The blast, with a force between 50 and 60 kilotons, triggered an natural disaster measured at 6.3 by the US Geological Survey. The last nuclear test Pyongyang conducted, which was almost a year ago, triggered a 5.3-magnitude seismological event.

North Korea triggered a new escalation of tensions in July, when it carried out two successful tests of an ICBM, the Hwasong-14, which apparently brought much of the United States mainland within range. Earlier in the day, the party's newspaper ran a front-page story showing photos of Kim examining what it said was a nuclear warhead being fitted onto the nose of an intercontinental ballistic missile.

North Korea conducted two nuclear tests previous year and has since maintained a torrid pace in weapons tests, including flight-testing developmental intercontinental ballistic missiles and flying a powerful midrange missile over Japan. It's further considering deployment of new US weapons on the Korean peninsula, as part of a long-standing U.S.

Residents of the Chinese border city of Yanji felt the jolt from North Korea's sixth and most powerful nuclear test but did not let it get in the way of a Sunday (Sept 3) of shopping and dining.

May, Abe pledge to increase pressure on North Korea
May arrived in Japan on Wednesday on a three-day official visit to the country, marked by the escalated North Korean threat. Before the meeting, May described Japan as "the UK's closest security partner in Asia" and a "like-minded partner".

North Korea also boasted that all of the components of the new weapon were "homemade", thus "enabling the country to produce powerful nuclear weapons, as many as it wants", without worrying about import sanctions.

The U.S. State Department had no immediate reaction.

Russia's foreign ministry said North Korea's action "deserves the strongest condemnation". It urged North Korea to "stop taking erroneous actions that deteriorate the situation".

Moon's top national security adviser Chung Eui-yong also held a telephone conversation with his U.S. counterpart Herbert McMaster, Cheong Wa Dae said.

Just hours before the nuclear test, Trump talked by phone with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe about the "escalating" nuclear crisis.

County game suspended after arrow fired into The Oval
The game itself was hardly eventful and was heading towards a draw with Middlesex stretching their second-innings lead past 180. "There are no reported injuries", Metropolitan Police was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

The nuclear test is the North's first since U.S. President Donald Trump assumed office in January.

President Trump threatened to meet North Korea with "fire and fury" in response to North Korean threats.

The country tested two nuclear weapons a year ago, including one in September close to the country's Foundation Day holiday.

It is nearly impossible to independently confirm North Korean statements about its highly secret weapons program.

At the same time, the simple power of the blast was convincing.

North Korea is thought to have a growing arsenal of nuclear bombs and has spent decades trying to flawless a multistage, long-range missile to eventually carry smaller versions of those bombs.
