Japanese Prime Minister calls snap election

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe plans to dissolve the lower house of parliament at the start of the extraordinary session on Thursday, a senior lawmaker of the Liberal Democratic Party said, paving the way for a snap election for the lower house.

Abe will dissolve the House of Representatives on September 28.

Abe is expected to hold a news conference after meeting with party executives and will likely put pledges to spend on education and child care, stay tough on North Korea and revise the constitution at the forefront of his campaign.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike on Monday announced the creation of a new party which she will use to jump to politics at the national level.

After lashing out at Pyongyang over its repeated provocations, Abe stated: "Elections that are the starting point of democracies should not be affected by any threats that may emerge from North Korea".

The prime minister of Japan is going to take an advantage of opposition disarray through the snap election.

The dollar met with "heavy profit-taking pressure" around ¥112.50, an official at a major Japanese bank said. Besides the North Korea crisis, the polls also come at a time when the country is facing a sluggish economy which needs a boost.

Abe will seek backing for a ¥2-trillion ($18-billion) economic package, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Monday, without attribution.

Despite a recent run of growth, the election victor will also have to contend with a sluggish economy, as the heavily indebted country grapples with a low birth rate and a shrinking labour force.

This "may seem normal in Japan but from overseas, it is hard to understand", Yora told AFP.
