Kenya: Supreme Court nullifies elections

The president was more combative later at a rally of supporters in a market in Nairobi. The court ruled that there were irregularities and that a new election is to be held within 60 days.

Mr Odinga added: "We won the elections and we are going to win them again".

Kenya's electoral commission said it would change personnel and processes to prepare for a new presidential vote.

In conclusion, the heads of mission lauded the dominance of democracy. "However the Supreme Court's decision should be respected whether it is good or bad", said Mr Gichimu.

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga is calling for the election commission to be disbanded after the Supreme Court nullified last month's presidential election as unconstitutional. "I'm telling, God is on our side".

The chairman stated that they as the 2 respondents in the case had noted the three grounds that the supreme court had used to arrive at the ruling.

The residents have also faulted the court, arguing that it should have invalidated the election in all the other seats if the law was not followed.

As his supporters took to the streets throughout the country to celebrate the court's decision, Kenya made history as the first country in Africa to annul a presidential election.

It said these issues would be elaborated on in the detailed judgment of the court, which is to be published within 21 days.

That 395,510 votes were deducted from Odinga's count and added to Kenyatta's.

"We are ready for elections but we don't have confidence in the IEBC", said Odinga.

Meanwhile, Kenyatta says although he disagrees with the Supreme Court ruling, he will respect the decision.

Odinga is a longtime challenger for the presidency who has yet to claim the country's top office.

Chief Justice David Maraga said a majority decision by the panel of seven judges, with two dissenting, found that President Uhuru Kenyatta "was not validly elected", rendering the result "invalid, null and void".

The president campaigned for a second five-year term on his record of large infrastructure projects and pro-business policies.

The court says the August 8 election was not conducted with accordance with the constitution.

Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition party National Super Alliance (NASA), had alleged widespread fraud in the August 8 vote, including the hacking of the electoral commission's computer system.

Kenyans had been braced for another round of protests if the court upholds Kenyatta's victory. At least 28 people have been killed in protests and clashes with the police since Odinga claimed the election was hacked and rejected the results. Police are deployed in the capital.
