Mozilla looks to challenge Chrome with Firefox Quantum

This new engine is named Quantum and was announced previous year as a savior for Firefox's sluggish Gecko engine that was built two decades ago, in 1997, for the now dead Netscape browser.

These performance gains are largely down to the use new CSS engine, written in Firefox's own Rust programming language, which sees the browser taking advantage of multi-core desktop and mobile devices. Firefox is also promised to use 30% less RAM than Chrome through the use of smart prioritization of active tabs. Indeed, the last three releases (Firefox 53, Firefox 54, and Firefox 55) have all included Quantum improvements.

Nick Nguyen from Mozilla wrote, "Engines are important, both in cars and in browsers".

Over the past several months, Mozilla has fixed 468 bugs that were slowing down the browser. That's only around 25% of all legacy plugins, meaning that almost 75% of all Firefox add-ons won't be available to users on the new version.

President Trump 'Not Happy' With Secretary Tom Price's Private Plane Use
Two other members of Mr Trump's cabinet are also under scrutiny for their use of private planes while on the job. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Tuesday that Price's trips weren't "White House-approved travel".

According to representatives of Mozilla rendering web content in Firefox, Quantum is taking advantage of multiple CPU cores, saving treasured seconds when rendering heavy web pages. Overall, it's got a more minimalist look, which will work well on high-DPI displays, but die-hard fans of the original style can still switch back to old familiar via preferences. Firefox Quantum also has native integration with Pocket, the read-it-later app that Mozilla acquired.

On Windows PCs with a touch display, menu sizes adjust to suit a mouse or finger.

The new design also features plenty of aesthetic changes; things like square tabs, smooth animations, and a Library, which provides quick access to your saved stuff: bookmarks, Pocket, history, downloads, tabs, and screenshots. When you open a new tab, you'll see now trending web pages recommended by Pocket users so you won't miss out on what's hot online, as well as your top sites. To reflect all these under-the-hood improvements, we've refined and rebuilt Firefox's user interface through our Photon project. Firefox Quantum's Developers Beta is available for Windows, MacOS as well as Linux, along with test versions available for Android and iOS as well.

Part of the redesigns for the UI came via the Photon Project that Mozilla was operating.
