New fires ravage Rohingya villages in northwest Myanmar

The United Nations said more than 290,000 people crossed the border from Myanmar into Bangladesh over the last two weeks since an August 25 crackdown on the stateless ethnic minority after, the military says, Rohingya militants attacked police posts.

De facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi has faced widespread criticism for her stance on the Rohingya.

Around 27,000 Buddhists and Hindus have also been displaced following attacks by Rohingya militants and are receiving government help in monasteries and schools. "She must be held accountable and tried", said party spokesman KM Atiqur Rahman.

Rohingya Muslims are considered to be among the world's most persecuted people.

According to the latest estimate by United Nations workers in the Cox's Bazar region of southern Bangladesh, about 294,000 - many of them sick or wounded - have arrived in just 15 days, putting a huge strain on humanitarian agencies' operations.

A Myanmar military source told Reuters last week that landmines had been laid along the border in the 1990s to prevent trespassing and the military had since tried to remove them.

Most live in the impoverished western state of Rakhine but are denied citizenship and harassed by restrictions on movement and work.

Sectarian violence between the Rohingya and local Buddhist communities broke out in 2012, leaving more than 100 dead and the state segregated along religious lines.

Emine Erdogan visited the Kutupalang Rohingya camp and adjacent makeshift refugee shelters at Ukhia upazila of Cox's Bazar yesterday afternoon, hours after her arrived in Dhaka.

Reporters from Associated Press on the Bangladesh side of the border said they had seen an elderly woman with devastating leg wounds: one leg with the calf apparently blown off and the other also badly injured.

"The worldwide community is saying it is a genocide".

Senator John McCain of Arizona also wrote to Ms Suu Kyi this week, noting that he had been her friend and supporter and calling on her "to take an active role in putting a stop to this worsening humanitarian crisis as it spreads throughout the country".
