Venus Williams Set To Play Tuesday

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams became the oldest semi-finalist in US Open history at age 37 on Tuesday by defeating two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7/2).

Sevastova, who matched her best major run from previous year at NY by ousting Maria Sharapova to reach the last eight, led 3-1 in the third set before Stephens rallied. She broke in the second game of the second set with a big backhand victor down the line and then saved two break points in holding serve for a 3-0 lead.

"Tiebreakers, you have to play smart, but you have to be aggressive", Williams said afterward. "No one ever gives you a slam".

In this year of tennis comebacks they hardly come more poignant than that of Petra Kvitova, who now finds herself within three wins of an unlikely US Open title. That is ridiculous. And so is how well Kvitova is playing despite missing the first five months of the year after suffering an terrible hand injury in a home invasion. Despite losing two Major opportunities (Australian Open and Wimbledon) what she has been doing over the past eight months is similar to what Federer means for the ATP tour in 2017.

"What she has gone through is unimaginable, unreasonable", Williams said.

Can she win two more?

Kenya: Supreme Court nullifies elections
The president campaigned for a second five-year term on his record of large infrastructure projects and pro-business policies. It said these issues would be elaborated on in the detailed judgment of the court, which is to be published within 21 days.

Neither woman played with a ton of subtlety, mainly trading stinging groundstrokes from the baseline on exchanges that grew in intensity as the 2-hour, 34-minute encounter went along.

As inspiring as their on-court display was, it is hard not to think of the struggles that each champion has overcome in recent years to reach this stage. A lot of times in those matches I just felt a little unlucky.

Kvitova got the early advantage to break for 3-1, but Williams then served to love and broke right back.

Muguruza remains ahead in a three-woman fight for world number one after the US Open but can be overtaken by Czech current number one Karolina Pliskova if she makes the final or Ukraine fourth seed Elina Svitolina if she reaches the semi-finals.

"If someone would have told me when I started at Wimbledon that I'd be in the semifinals or making three semifinals back-to-back, I would have said they're insane", Stephens said after her win Tuesday.

"Life is still a little bit unusual, but it's getting better as well", she admitted this week.

While all students are eligible, parents are still asked to register through this website so enough food and funding can be secured.

"This is just incredible", Stephens said. I'm not thinking like that anymore. "All I have known all my life was great American players, so it's great to see this resurgence". The 27-year-old also gained a berth in the quarters in 2015, when she lost to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta.

If Americans Madison Keys and CoCo Vanderweghe win Wednesday, they will join Williams and Stephens in the first all-American US Open semi-finals since 1981.

The bottom half of the men's U.S. Open has been tarred, feathered, and quite simply laughed at over the past two weeks. I just didn't want to put it [in] like [softly].

Stephens went 11 months between tournaments because of problems with her left foot.

"It was a quarter-final, but I know how tough it is to get a title". "I didn't really think that I could come so far". The world we live in is just shocking.

Quiet weather for the weekend
A couple of afternoon showers could arrive in our area Tuesday afternoon or evening, but otherwise it should be partly sunny. Highs are expected to be in the lower to mid-80s, but I believe a few spots with heavier rain will be held back in the 70s.
