Victims in El Capitan rockfall Wednesday are from Great Britain

- A massive chunk of rock fell from the face of the El Capitan granite monolith in Yosemite National Park on Wednesday afternoon, killing one person and injuring at least one other.

The rocks appeared to have fallen from an area near the popular "Waterfall Route" climbing trail during an active time for hiking in the popular national park.

The man was with a British woman who was seriously injured, the park's ranger Scott Gediman said.

The Los Angeles Times reported about 30 climbers were on El Capitan at the time of the rockfall. Officials say many climbers were on El Capitan when the rock fall happened.

It had been 18 years since the last rockfall-related fatality in Yosemite National Park, officials said. The male victim was found dead and the female was flown out of the park with serious injuries.

John DeGrazio of YExplore Yosemite Adventures said Thursday he had just reached the summit of Half Dome with a group of hikers when they saw large plumes of dust rising up the vertical wall of El Capitan. "Once we saw how quickly it dissipated, we knew it wasn't a fire". Officials were using a helicopter to search the area for any other people injured in the rockfall, which occurred on a day with clear blue skies at the height of climbing season.
