Cook County board votes 15-1 to repeal sugary drink tax

The ordinance calls for a penny-an-ounce tax on sugar- and artificially sweetened beverages.

Controversial tax on soda in Cook County, Ill., could end up on the chopping block. Opponents of the tax included retailers and the American Beverage Association. But among its supporters were health advocates such as billionaire Michael Bloomberg, whose super PAC ran more than $2 million worth of ads defending the tax as a way to fight obesity and other health conditions.

Wednesday's final vote came after a similar finance committee vote Tuesday. "Residents and consumers have been forced to pay more on over 1,000 everyday beverages, including diet drinks", the anti-tax Can the Tax Coalition said in a statement on its website. Board President Toni Preckwinkle is considering his options, including vetoing the repeal. The tax has been tormented in its very short life by legitimate challenges, execution glitches, and a howling multimillion-dollar media battle amongst the soda industry and public health groups.
